Implant Prosthetic Contours and Hygiene

I’ve just arrived back in the States from Australia and my batteries are fully recharged.  My fellow presenters at the SMS Neoss Conference were just awesome.  Seriously.  I’m filled with awe.

My topic was called “Emerging Concepts in Emergence Profiles,” a look at techniques, rationales, and challenges  with preserving and sculpting the gingiva around an implant restoration.

What should the subgingival shape of an implant crown look like?  What’s the difference between overcontour and undercontour?  One of the topics I discussed in my lecture was the inadequate definitions of contour.  I’m just beginning some in vitro studies on this very subject.  In the mean time, I want to share an article I wrote that gets the conversation started.

This will be published next month in RDH Magazine,a terrific publication that educates our hygienists.  Yes, in my opinion, this area of research has great influence on causing peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis.
